SERIAL: OPERATION SUNRISE, CHAPTER 18

Grimly Whetfox continues his para-psychological thriller OPERATION SUNRISE now -and our hero is more than a little pissed off... sometimes blogs can be used to mess with people's minds, you see.

He read it twice to be sure, to see what he'd missed, to make more sense of it. There was no two ways about it, two years had passed and the game was still on. What the fuck was going on in her tiny little eggshell mind? Does she think this is funny? Like she's teasing me? Is she laughing at me? No. It was too sentimental. Too emotional. Well disguised but blatant. Her friends must think she is a weird, weird girl, posting this sort of crap on the internet. Is this story supposed to be factual? She could almost get away with it, he saw, if she was going to be this smart about it. What a girl ...READ MORE

FLASH: SIMPLEXITY

Paul S. Grimsley tells extraordinarily vivid, wildly imaginative tales, usually in the SF genre - this Flashfic is no exception. If I gave you too much information I'd spoil it... just read it, and watch as Paul singlehandedly makes mathematics epically cool in under 1000 words. Then go and find his stuff for The 434 on Facebook, and have your mind blown some more. What are you waiting for?

Turner pulled the simplicity blade from its sheath, keened its edge on a few mathematical problems and watched as its hunger grew for complexities. Out here on the edge of mathspace things sometimes got quite hairy ...READ MORE

FICTION: CASEFILE 17

Please give a hearty welcome to Brother Three, our newest Weaponeer. His first contribution is a short story in the form of an interrogatory dialogue - after a controversial series of neuroscientific experiments, a doctor answers questions from two shadowy officials... but what sinister secrets is the doctor hiding about Patient Zero? The original image for this story is 'O is for Occipital Lobe' by Illuminaut.

He began first by scratching his head when confused. Not exactly a rare symptom, so it went unnoticed. It was only when he broke the skin that we realised he was scratching the exact line of incision we had cut along to remove the top of the head ...READ MORE

STEVE AYLETT & CHEMICAL POETS, THE ROXY ARTHOUSE, FRIDAY 29/11

Chemical Poets are set to support legendary SF writer, agitator and raconteur Steve Aylett this Friday at The Roxy Arthouse's Death Weekend event. Aylett is a seminal figure in British SF and counter-culture - here's a clip where Alan Moore and other luminaries of UK alt-lit talk about the man and his work:

The gig starts at 7.30pm, and costs £4 - come down for some high-speed verbal highjinks from ChemPo, and what's sure to be a memorable reading from mister Aylett.

**REMINDER**

Sileni, Asthmatic Astronaut and Mute Hate are performing as 'Labyrinth Of Wings' tonight at the Traverse Theatre! 8pm start - don't miss it, this performance is going to be spectacular.

ASTHMATIC ASTRONAUT & SILENI LIVE THIS WEEKEND IN EDINBURGH

Two of the acts who helped set up Black Lantern Music last year are playing this weekend in Edinburgh at eclectic, boutique music event Hidden Door 2. Asthmatic Astronaut, whose 'Super Intelligent Common Sense' album was released this year, is playing on Saturday at 7.55pm, and Sileni, whose follow up to 'Riders on the Conquering Worm' is coming soon on Black Lantern, are playing on Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are available from the Hidden Door site. I spoke to DJ AA about the gig this week - he told me The Roxy Arthouse has been remodelled as an elaborate maze, with performances, installations and strange goings on over several levels. This sounds like a gig to remember!

The musicians of Sileni and AA often collaborate, with Harlequinade contributing vocals to Church Of When The Shit Hits The Fan and Asthmatic Astronaut providing beats for the Chemical Poets. On Monday 24th, you can see AA join Sileni for a live performance involving music, costumes, puppetry, dance and visual alchemy from MuteHate, at The Traverse Theatre's new spoken word poetry season, TraVerses. This is a free gig, starting at 8pm - so no excuses for missing that one.

Subscribe to this feed for more news on upcoming Black Lantern-related events... we've got big plans. Thanks for all the support you've shown so far.

Please welcome our newest Weaponeer, Mo Ali. A Pushcart Prize-nominated writer, Mo is also an artist and a poet. He is also the designer of the lovely BONEGUN tee-shirt in the Weaponwear store! His first flashfic for us is an experimental piece of fantasy. The original image for this story is 'The Giant's Head' by Ennor.

Well, let’s see... a sound of digging, of feet sinking into wet mud, the cascading thud of earth thrown to one side, like... like rain on the soul I suppose. A drumming, over and over, a rhythmic knell across a monotone landscape ...READ MORE

ASTHMATIC ASTRONAUT ON RADIO 1

Last night, Asthmatic Astronaut delivered an exclusive interview and live session on the Vic Galloway Radio 1 New Music Show. He performed tracks form his own 'Super Intelligent Common Sense' album, and also some tracks from the new Black Lantern / NeverZone release, Church Of When The Shit Hits The Fan, featuring vocals by rapper Harlequinade (Sileni / Chemical Poets). Another BLM signing, Krowne, was also along for the ride. It's a great session: nice to hear AA reminiscing about his DJ days, and the much-missed Underling. Harlequinade is also on fearsome form. Go and listen to the session on BBC iPlayer now!

SERIAL: OPERATION SUNRISE, CHAPTER 17

Grimly Whetfox continues his para-psychological thriller OPERATION SUNRISE now - our two protagonists talk on the phone once more, and the full meaning and significance of the sigil is discussed.

"You need to get a pressure washer back there. You know, one of those high pressure hoses they use for washing cars at a garage. Not technically so hard, although my neighbours are going to wonder why there is some hot chick in the back lane who doesn't live around here, pressure washing strange old graffiti off the walls. Good god girl... That pentagram has been there for years." ...READ MORE

FICTION: LOOKING FOR...

A heart-warming tale of love in the age of MMORPGs now, from Michael Jacobo, author of 'Dr Carron' and 'Elsewhere on the Planet'. The original image for this story is 'Knight of the Woods' by Caro's Lines.

As he sighed and his heart slowed he received the first message of the night: “Greetings program!” That was one of their many teases. They both joked that the other was some kind of artificial intelligence because of the way they got along and just understood each other. He eagerly replied, “Greetings Professor. Would you like to play a game?” ...READ MORE

FREE MUSIC! CHURCH OF WHEN THE SHIT HITS THE FAN - OCTO GATE / LOCUST RITUAL EP

YOYOYOYOYOYO! Sit up and pay attention - the Church Of When The Shit Hits The Fan have just burst onto the Scottish hip-hop scene, and to paraphrase rapper Harlequinade, once you hear them the world will look at you differently.

From the NeverZone they ride, carrying a black lantern...

Combining the up-front, hard-edged electronic assault of Asthmatic Astronaut, on ferocious form in his first official outing since 'Super Intelligent Common Sense,' and the twisted flows of hQ, fresh from production duties on 'Vortex Cabaret,' this EP is the rawest, sickest three tracks of hip-hop / electro to come out of Scotland in a long time.

Read their insane bio for more information about the project.

COWTSHTF are featured on today's Radio Scotland Music Cafe show with Vic Galloway - tune in to catch them live in session, no doubt destroying the place as they did last Sunday at the Black Lantern birthday party.

EDIT: COWTSHTF actually appeared on Vic Galloway's Radio 1 New Music: Scotland show. And yes, they destroyed it. Listen again for exclusive live tracks by both COWTSHTF and Asthmatic Astronaut. Thanks to Vic for pointing out my mistake!

FREE MUSIC! HARLEQUINADE FT. TEXTURE & LAUGHING GEAR - VORTEX CABARET

Rapper, musician, writer, film-maker and agent provocoteur extraordinaire Harlequinade delivers the follow-up to his production debut 'Nihilymous Germscapes' in one unbroken track, featuring vocal contributions from Laughing Gear of Eaters, and Texture.

"A lot of my work tends to the flippant and novelty, so it was great to have an opportunity, in Vortex Cabaret, to tackle some of the socio-political issues that have been plaguing me recently," Harlequinade says. "It has been a great experiment involving relevant and important debates in an environment which rarely tackles controversy.

"Another important facet to Vortex Cabaret is the lack of any samples in light of the recent lawsuit which delayed, and eventually destroyed, the 'Neural Noise Network' album. Initially a hinderance, this restriction has sculpted my ways of working in many ways and shall no doubt  continue to inform future endeavours.

"A massive thank you to Texture and Laughing Gear for
contributing vocals.

"Peace y'all."

The sky was the colour of mercury, with clouds like smudges from nicotine stained fingers. That’s how it looked to me anyway. I’d been up for close to thirty-six hours on a rather special diet of single malt, cheap vodka, expensive tequila and no food.
