FICTION: FOR ECHO

Meet the newest Weaponeer, Sarajevo-born Aleksandra Bilic. Her first short story for Weaponizer is a haunting, mysterious tale of a tortured, ecstatic soul in wartime, full of haunting imagery and elliptical turns of phrase.

The man I knew was passionate, he loved to drink and smoked to get high, he loved to sing very loudly and dance with his best friends, hold them very close and very tight to his chest. He knew they were important but he didn’t suffocate them, they blossomed in his smile and in his arms ...READ SHORT FICTION 'FOR ECHO' NOW

FREE MUSIC! TEXTURE - SYNAESTHESIA

'Synaesthesia' is a neurologically-based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. Synaesthetes may experience smells as colours, or sounds as flavours - they may mistake indie for house music, or rap for dubstep.

"This one's been a long time coming."

That's what I said when I released my first EP, 'Aphasia,' back in January of this year. Well now THIS one's been a long time coming!
Several of these tracks have been around for a while - I performed 'Echo Boomers' live on Radio 1 for the Vic Galloway show, and it has been part of my live repertoire for quite some time.  Over a twisted electro beat courtesy of Morphamish, this is a track about Generation Y - an anthem for a generation of feckless, hedonistic, bitter idealists.

'The Dawn View' started life as a track for the Double Helix album 'Future Proof,' and has been resurrected here by Morphamish with some killer organic synths, live guitar and intricate drum programming. It's the story of a walk home from a club at 5am, and a fond recollection of the MDMA years. It's a house track - something of a departure for me - and features me singing (yes, singing...no shit).

'Silver Age' features a verse from talented Glasgow-based rapper / producer Kid Ritalin, one of the trio who run the superlative Little Rock Records netlabel. Once again, Morphamish pulls out all the stops with a twisted broken beat and some killer synths.

'Non-Sequitr,' exquisitely produced in 6/8 time by Salem Anders of Burning Bright, is a lovesong for Scotland's slept-on hip-hop scene, the lyrics referencing some of the great Scottish bands past and present, alongside some well-intentioned digs at Yanqui emcees. We made a video for this track, which you can watch here.

A blend of hip-hop, electro, folk and house music, with the familar lyrical concerns of a 'bookworm emcee,' as I've been described in reviews of 'Aphasia.' I hope you enjoy it - please let me know what you think! The follow up, 'Parasomnia,' will be released around the new year.

If you're in Edinburgh, come and see me perform tracks from 'Aphasia' and 'Synaesthesia' at 8pm at Electric Circus this Saturday, alongside Tickle of Burning Bright and DJ Biggi B-Boy Beatmaster B, in our debut live performance as The Black Lantern Allstars. We'll be doing more gigs as the Allstars, bringing in emcees from other Black lantern bands, plus exclusive guests like Kid Ritalin. Keep your eyes peeled for gigs in your area! This is going to be a special show - we've had dubplates cut specially for the gig, and the combination of Biggi's turntablism with our flows is a new direction for us as performers. Full details of the gig can be found here.

ALSO! Come back tomorrow morning for ANOTHER awesome free EP from Black Lantern Music: the thrilling collaboration between Asthmatic Astronaut and Krowne, which mortal men know as KROMATIC! These guys are also playing Saturday. Can you dig it?

FLASH FICTION: DANCERS

One from your friendly neighbourhood verb-slinger and editor-at-large - this is an SF / body-horror / transhuman flashfic I wrote for The 434. I'm hugely honoured to be reading it tonight at Writer's Bloc's new storytelling gig at The Wee Red Bar. If you;re in the 'Burgh, pop down around 8pm - there will also be stories from Harlequinade, Stephen Barnaby and many other damn fine scribes. The original image for this story is 'Untitled' by Francesca E. Harris (and boy, is it freaky).

We’d sniff or spike before we went out. She always took the first hit – muscles in her thin arms popping out like thick cord, sweat glistening on her brow. She was beautiful in a brittle way. The deadly gleam in her eyes, like a handmade prison shank, made me want to fuck her right there on the dirty floor, every time… but this wasn’t about love, or even lust.  It was about the dance. That, and the buzz ...READ FLASH FICTION 'DANCERS' NOW

SERIAL FICTION: STILLETTO EYE & RAZORGUT AND THE WAR OF THE CONQUERING WORM

For the uninitiated, the adventures of STILLETTO EYE & RAZORGUT began some time ago, with the deadly duo boarding a tall ship just befre it was attacked by a sea monster. Since then, they have observed demons, ghouls, aliens and killer robots from the comfort of their black 55 Cadillac, Betsy. See below for a list of their adventures so far. In today's episode, our heroes chance upon some good old fashioned trench warfare... with one big difference. Welcome to the weird world of DWAYNE COLTRANE & THE HYPERDEATHPSYCHOROCK 3!

There was an almighty explosion in the ground just in front of the trenches, and mud and debris showered down on them. A gigantic worm burst out of the ground and sped down towards the men, it’s gaping mouth a pulsating stack of whirring, blade-like teeth, as if from a pile of lawnmowers. It came down into the trench, and raced along the groove, pulverizing the men as it went ...READ 'STILLETTO EYE & RAZORGUT AND THE WAR OF THE CONQUERING WORM'

FREE MUSIC! METATRON - JOURNEYS EP

Metatron (known to some as The Niallist, fierce ruling diva of the Little Rock Records clan), returns with the follow up to the understated dubstep of the 'Creation Myths' EP. The first track 'Planes' is a departure, with Metatron serving up some serious glitch and wobble, with a distinctively brutal techno edge. 'Trains' is a more familiar beast, with ghostly organs and eroded synths playing out over a minimal dubstep break. The echoing funk of 'Automobiles' closes the EP, the sound of the last dance at a spectral disco. Are you ready to Journey with Metatron..? Step this way!

FREE MUSIC! MO-SEPH & JOSIE DAVIS - SOMOS NANAS

A veteran of Edinburgh's electronic noise and ambient scene, mo-seph is a producer who is no stranger to the weirder, more experimental end of music, both as a live performer and a recording artist. In contrast to his last two releases on Black Lantern - the stately, melodic electronica of 'Growth & Form' and 'The Other Place' - his new mini-album, a collaboration with vocalist Josie Davis, is a challenging experimental fusion of electronics and deconstructed vocal snippets. Pseudo-songs and fractured sighs collide with synth stabs and spectral glitches. One thing is certain - it is a unique record, the likes of which you are not likely to see again this year.

SERIAL FICTION: KANSAS, CHAPTER 9: KANSAS

Another layer of the narrative is peeled back as we meet slick corporate hustler Jhel Phen in Chapter Nine of Matthew McLean's post-cyberpunk thriller 'Kansas,' and get one step closer to finding out why the story has this title. Things are heating up!

Jhel Phen looked at the earnest young woman in front of him and gave her his most comforting smile. He made certain to keep any hint of sexuality out of it, but that was easy for him. Jhel categorized his smiles and demeanors the way other lesser creatures categorized their wardrobes. He was aware of himself and the impression he gave to others at any given moment ...READ #SERIAL #FICTION 'KANSAS: CHAPTER 9' NOW

SERIAL FICTION: OPERATION SUNRISE, CHAPTER 19

Para-psychological thriller OPERATION SUNRISE, by reclusive literary weirdo and lucid dreaming expert extraordinaire Grimly Whetfox approaches its conclusion. As coincidences abound and the line between dream and reality starts to blur, our hero has whatever is the opposite of a 'moment of clarity'...

He woke up with a start, suddenly, as if there were nothing between the dream world and the awake world but the click of a switch, the snapping of fingers. That had been intense, he thought, opening his eyes and looking at he ceiling. He couldn't wake up! He had been stuck! He had really freaked out there, he realised, listening to his pumping heart beat and his slowly calming breathing. Trying to tear through the veil, unable to get out, get air, get awake, so claustrophobic! The thought that he could be dead, this could be forever, you are trapped, you can't get out of here, YOU CAN'T WAKE UP...! Ringing in his neurons like a pulse, a steadily diminishing pulse of terror deep in his brain. How had he finally managed to wake up? How did he get out? He couldn't remember ...READ #SERIAL #FICTION: 'OPERATION SUNRISE' CHAPTER 19

THE MASON LANG FILM CLUB

Weaponizer's resident occult blogger Ian 'Cat' Vincent returns with the intorduction to a season of essays on cult films, all exploring ideas of consciousness and reality. Some old favourites and well-known films are used as jumping-off points to explore a very weird moment in cinema history; where many, many films seemed deternine to tip off the audience to the fact that reality might not be quite what it seems... ladies and gentlemen, welcome to 'The Mason Lang Film Club'... The first piece is an introduction to the main movies to be discussed, and features previews of the entire season.

“I see this weird stuff every time I watch a movie…”

Ever had that thing where a fictional character describes something about how they see the world, something most people consider strange or unusual, and they say it so aptly that you could have been saying that line yourself?

That’s exactly what happened when I read the above lines from the character Mason Lang, in Grant Morrison’s apocalyptic game-changer of a comic book The Invisibles. Because I’ve had that same problem for years.

FLASH FICTION: VERMIN DEATH STAR

Please give a warm Weaponizer welcome to Mark Harding, founder of Mutation Press and editor of the fantastic SF/Fantasy collection 'Music For Another World'.His first story for us, inspired by the sculpture of Damian Hirst and David Falconer, is an SF tale of a very different apocalypse...

There are no walls or flooring to separate the fighting rats. The Death Star is held together by a spherical field mesh, each rat serving as a generator node. The exterior shell of the field mesh has calculated points of weakness, designed to allow the micro-debris of space to penetrate with little reduction in velocity. This provides a steady stream of missiles to kill enough of the rats to more or less feed the rest of the population. Almost enough to feed the swarming vermin, but not quite; it being a required outcome that the rats are forced to kill and eat their comrades to encourage the desired level of viciousness ...READ #FLASHFIC 'VERMIN DEATH STAR'

FLASH FICTION: SIXTEEN TONS

Not much is known about our newest Weaponeer, who goes by the name of Fritz Bogott, other than that he is from Minnesota, and enjoys baking bread.

THIS JUST IN! Fritz has given us a full bio - and he has written two Creative Commons novels - Boggle and Sneak, and Pismo, which you can read for free. Go check out his stuff! For more information about Fritz, have a read of his wonderfully eclectic blog, where he has posted plenty of fiction and other writings. His first flashfic for Weaponizer is a darkly comic tale of love, magic, coal and dead canaries. The original image for this story is 'Pittsburgh Coal Miners' by Thiophene Guy.

The 8 train goes straight into the mine. I break coal from the seam until my boots are buried, then I shovel it into a skip, then I go back to my hammer. At the end of the day the cars are silent, the blackened riders too tired to speak ...READ #FLASHFIC 'SIXTEEN TONS' NOW!

FICTION: NORMATIVE FREE

It is my great pleasure to announce the return of one of Weaponizer's early adopters, and a stalwart behind the scenes instigator, the wonderfully warped mind mere mortals know as CITRUS CREED, self-styled 'writer of at least two wrongs and a scribbler of filthy sibilant songs.' He returns with the long-awaited (and unrelated) follow up to the delicious 'Bananas'... what can only be described as a tale of existential transhuman parkour in a psychdelic transdimensional mutant apocalypse. Be amazed. By a strange coincidence, this is our 200th article. Happy 200, my fellow Weaponeers and readers. Hope you'll be around for 200 more!

Final fastened his lower jaw and spurred himself into a run, the alien matter stitched into the meat of his body seething and quickening with restless energy. Ahead of him the looming high-rises gave way to shorter, squatter structures. Already the first lean grey form was at the nearest of these, hopping onto the bulky charred skeleton of an abandoned vehicle then springing to get one foot on top of a perimeter wall, rebounding up and backwards, torquing in the air to grab the edge of the roof with both hands and swinging fluidly up on to it to disappear out of sight, dissolving into liquid shadows ...READ #FLASHFIC 'NORMATIVE FREE'

SERIAL: KANSAS, CHAPTER 8 - MESH

KANSAS is an ongoing SF / espionage thriller, set in the near future. It's 7 chapters in at the moment, and writer Matthew McLean is putting the pieces on the board slowly and mysteriously. We know that Dragon, AKA Lawrence Dragowski, is an underworld figure, with ties in the spook and criminal communities. We've met The Butcher, an affiliate of Dragon's, with a head full of potentially weaponized biotech - a mysterious spook with a sixth sense for violence and trouble. Hatcher has arrived at the Alon bar, a hideout frequented by the underworld types in Moscow's vast sprawl. In today's chapter, we follow Hatcher deeper into the Alon Bar, and find out exactly what goes on behind closed doors. All will be revealed...

The mesh confounded Hatcher almost as much as it had helped him. Designed for covert ops to mask articifical limbs against casual metallic and magnetic scans, the synth-lectric mesh was not quite as fragile as a butterfly's wing, but it certainly did not appreciate any rough handling ...READ MORE

FLASH: VOTE FOR POOLE

We like a bit of political satire here at Weaponizer, especially if it involves a little bit of cloning, mind control, black magic, evil demons and ritual sacrifice. It seems Geoffrey D. Wessel (author of 'Posey') has an axe to grind with today's politicians - let's see how this plays out...

"Ah yes," said the clerk, after confirming that indeed, the names of the candidates were James Poole (D) and James Poole (R). "You see, with the suddenness of Senator Flaherty's death, there wasn't time to mount a proper campaign. Yet, the seat must be filled and the work of government must continue. Thankfully, the local scientific community offered a solution." ...READ MORE
