THE FACE OF PROPOSITION "HATE"

Meredith Yayanos was attacked by anti-abortion and gay marriage protesters while filming their 'peaceful demonstration' on her camera phone.

Full story here.

The Face of Proposition 8 from Theremina on Vimeo.

Also spotted today in white Amerikka: Sci-fi hack Orson Scott Card comes up with a bizarre quasi-fascist stance on the Proposition 8 issue, and advocates non-violent resistance to the government as a means to stop the spread of equal rights for homosexuals and freedom of choice for pregnant women. JULIAN COPE IN MAES HOWE, ORKNEY

Thanks to Warren Ellis for the link to this - the other parts of this documentary are also available on Saxondaleroscks' YouTube channel.

It's called The Modern Antiquarian, and basically involves Julian Cope walking around ancient British archaeological sites talking about megalithic culture. Cope released a book of the same name, which this series is based on. There's also a brilliant website you can check out.

I loved this section, about Maes Howe and the other ancient sites in Orkney. As a kid, I used to come here every summer with my family. Our connection to the islands is on my Mum's side - her grandfather was the painter Stanley Cursiter. Stanley actually cast some silver jewellery using a sketch of the Maes Howe dragon, carved into the wall of the chamber by the Vikings. This and other Viking and pagan sources were a great inspiration to him in his painting and architectural design work.

Below are some photos of sketches Stanley did for a lithograph based on the Norse pantheon of gods, and for the carved chairs used in the back of St Magnus cathedral.

DOUBLE HELIX - FUTURE PROOF

FUTURE PROOF is the debut album by DOUBLE HELIX.

The album is now available to buy from Nu Urban Music, and there's a free promo mix available from Audiodacity.

It's a fusion of dubstep, techno and spoken word.

Here's what the press have said:

“One of the most inventive pieces of British hip-hop that we’ve heard in a long, long time.”
- MARY ANNE HOBBES (re. album track 'Complacency')

“… An innovative sound that kicks you squarely between the eyes, every time you think you know where it’s going… Double Helix are pretty hot at what they do. Their grimey electronic sound, infused with energy and innovation, is a welcome change from much of the formulaic mediocrity that has arisen out of the grime and crunk scenes of late... Intrigued? You should be…”
- CLASH MAGAZINE

“Hints of distorted guitar wail sit alongside head-fuck techno reminiscent of Chan 'n' Mikes Records output, the hurry-up urgency of blistering breakbeat grime, the descending bass of d&b and distended electronics.”
- THE SKINNY

PARKOUR IN THE BURGH

Found this on the awesome Noise Porn site, which caters to underground music tastes... it's really good. I have definitely seen people practising Parkour down at Bristo Square, and they were good, but the skills in this video will blow you away.

CHARLIE BROOKER'S 'DEAD SET'

Charlie Brooker's new TV show is called Dead Set. It's a zombie-based satire of the Big Brother phenomenon. It looks pretty awesome, although the fact it's an E4 production made with Endemol's co-operation could mean that Brooker's incisive satirical genius may have been kept on a leash. The preview at least looks incredible, with some great effects and very funny moments. I'm looking forward to this eagerly.

The show's website is worth a look too, some cool stuff on there - check out the viral video on the 'Get Infected' page.
